Dr. Jessica Fogel

Biography

Jessica Fogel is a Professor Emerita at the University of Michigan's Dance Department. With a career spanning several decades, she has produced and choreographed interdisciplinary dances that involve unique collaborations, merging movement with text, music, and digital projections. Fogel's work draws inspiration from diverse sources, including particle physics, astronomical research, visual art, poetry, and literature. She has developed site-specific dance projects that explore the relationship between arts and environmental stewardship. Notable recent works include 'Wind,' inspired by the harnessing of offshore wind in the Great Lakes, and performances celebrating the history of downtown Ann Arbor. Fogel's works have been commissioned and produced by organizations such as the Dance Theater Workshop, Lincoln Center Touring Program, and the Toledo Museum of Art. She has also lectured on her choreographic process at various international conferences. Fogel has received multiple awards throughout her career, including the Michigan Choreographers Festival Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the JCC Metropolitan Detroit.
