Jessica Frelinghuysen sculpts objects that help negotiate social anxieties and continually seeks to reconcile the separation of the individual from society. When encountering a new place, she spends a long time observing and sketching to try to figure out how her work fits into that particular environment. While she might find aspects of absurdity, she also appreciates the importance of humor as a vehicle for engagement. She has traveled and lectured extensively, conceiving projects like Germination Corps which actively involve working with communities globally. Her work has been exhibited at the International Print Center New York and other nationally significant venues such as the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, Public Pool Gallery in Hamtramck, and the Aspen Art Museum. Frelinghuysen has been awarded artist residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts in California, SIM residency in Reykjavik, Iceland, Sculpture Space in New York, Anderson Ranch Center for the Arts in Colorado, and the Vermont Studio Center. Her multimedia participatory works have been reviewed in publications ranging from Artforum Magazine to Wired UK.
