Dr. Jessica Hemmings

Biography

Jessica Hemmings is a British academic, writer, and researcher specializing in textiles and contemporary craft. She has a BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MA in Comparative Literature from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Currently, she serves as a Professor of Craft at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, and holds a Professor II position at the Oslo School of Architecture & Design. Her research explores the contributions of craft to contemporary society, with a focus on representations of craft in postcolonial literature, particularly concerning Indonesia and Zimbabwe. Jessica supervises PhD candidates at HDK and externally at institutions like the University of the Arts Bremen and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. She has held various academic appointments and roles, including external examiner for MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art, London, and is a member of editorial boards for several academic journals. Her current research is supported by the Swedish Research Council and examines themes of material oppression and expression in craft.
