Born in the Canadian prairies and raised in Saudi Arabia, Jessica Meeuwig obtained her dive certificate at age 15, which allowed her to witness the health of reefs during the 1980s and 1990s. She earned a BSc in tropical marine biology from McGill University, followed by a Master's in Environmental Studies from Dalhousie University, focusing on coastal policy, and completed her PhD at McGill University studying limnology. Jessica has a significant background in conservation biology, influenced by her mentor Rob Peters. Currently, she holds the Wen Family Chair in Conservation and directs the Marine Futures Lab at the University of Western Australia. Her work aims to enhance our understanding of the ecology of marine life, particularly in open-ocean ecosystems, and reflects the evaluation of anthropogenic impacts on these habitats. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach to marine conservation, utilizing methods such as baited remote underwater video systems, acoustic satellite tagging, and behavioral studies. Through her research, Jessica strives to effectively communicate science to inform policy both within Australia and internationally.
