Dr. Jessica Mesman

Biography

Jessica Mesman holds the Chair of ‘Complexity Epistemic Diversity’ at Maastricht University, Netherlands. Her expertise lies in Science and Technology Studies, with a focus on medical practices, particularly in Intensive Care Units, Surgery, and Emergency. Mesman is internationally recognized for her work on ‘exnovation’, a progressive concept that emphasizes the importance of understanding and utilizing existing practices while combining innovation with scientific inquiry. Her current research involves navigating complexities in healthcare through video-reflexive ethnography (VRE), an interventionist and collaborative method that redefines visual analysis using (non)modern epistemic frameworks. Mesman has authored numerous publications, including her inaugural speech; works on participatory visual research; and challenges in video-reflexive ethnography in busy healthcare settings. She is a full professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University and has a significant career history with various roles, including Associate Dean of Education. Throughout her career, she has been a key figure in collaborative projects across healthcare settings in the Netherlands and internationally, and she offers educational consultations and classes on VRE as part of her commitment to improving practical outcomes in research. Mesman also engages with global universities and participates in numerous international advisory committees.
