Dr. Jessica Stockholder

Biography

Jessica Stockholder works at the intersection of painting and sculpture, creating energetic and idiosyncratic works that explore the physicality of art. Her practice often incorporates architectural elements, enveloping spaces in installations that engage with the surrounding landscape. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University, she has held significant academic roles, including serving as Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago and directing the Sculpture Department at Yale for twelve years. Stockholder's work has been widely exhibited across North America and Europe, featured in prestigious venues such as the Dia Art Foundation in New York City, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Venice Biennale. Her notable collections include the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She has received recognition through grants such as the Lucelia Artist Award from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In addition to her artistic accomplishments, Stockholder was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018.
