Biography

Jessica Sayles West is a medical sociologist specializing in the research of hearing loss, aging, and health disparities across the life course. Her work has examined the 'spillover' effects of hearing loss on health outcomes for individuals, particularly those in sociodemographically disadvantaged groups, and the implications for life expectancy associated with the onset of hearing loss. Through the use of population-level data and electronic health records, her research has been published in notable journals such as The Journals of Gerontology and The Journal of General Internal Medicine. Currently, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Head Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences at Duke University, Jessica is actively involved in studying the impacts of hearing handicap on health care encounters, particularly among older adults, and has received grants from the National Institute on Aging to continue her research efforts.
