Biography

Jessica Winegar is a sociocultural anthropologist specializing in cultural politics, with a focus on the intersection of various social arenas, such as art worlds and education, that hold liberating potential while also reproducing hierarchies of gender, class, and race/ethnicity. With extensive training and research experience in the Middle East, her work draws from a range of disciplines to address institutions dealing with the MENA region. Winegar's current book project examines the aesthetic forms and practices that played a central role in delegitimizing revolutionary actions during Egypt's 2011 uprising. Her previous work, 'Creative Reckonings: Politics Art Culture Contemporary Egypt,' received accolades for its examination of cultural authenticity in Egypt during market liberalization. Winegar has published numerous scholarly articles focusing on the 2011 uprising in Egypt, visual arts, and the representation of the Middle East in U.S. media. Throughout her career, she has received several prestigious grants and fellowships, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fulbright program. She currently teaches at Northwestern University, where she is a core member of the Program in Middle East and North African Studies.
