Biography

Jessie Speer joined the Department of Geography and Environment as an Assistant Professor in 2020. Her research examines struggles in urban domestic spaces, with particular focus on marginalized groups within society. She employs political economy, feminist, and postcolonial approaches to study urban displacement and the contests faced by unhoused individuals against normative domesticity within capitalist housing markets. Her current book project is based on in-depth ethnographic and archival research, which explores the demolition of homeless encampments in the United States as part of a larger attack on urban informality. Other projects she is involved in include literary and historical analyses of memoirs and oral histories related to homelessness, as well as legal analyses concerning the nexus of migration and housing displacement in the United Kingdom. Before her academic career, Jessie practiced law in California, where she worked with legal aid clinics to assist people experiencing domestic violence and eviction.
