Biography

Ji-Eun Byun is a Lecturer in Smart Sustainable Resilient Infrastructure at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. She holds a combined MS/PhD in Civil Environmental Engineering from Seoul National University, South Korea, where her major focus was on Structural System Reliability Engineering. Her dissertation, titled 'Matrix-based Bayesian network for reliability assessment decision making complex large-scale systems', was supervised by Junho Song. Ji-Eun's research interests lie at the intersection of reliability, resilience, and uncertainty in complex systems, emphasizing the use of Bayesian networks, probabilistic modeling, and data analysis to manage risks. She aims to integrate social and physical vulnerability in risk assessments to support inclusive decision-making processes. With experience as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Technical University of Munich and University College London, her projects tackled predictive maintenance for large civil systems and the multi-hazard physical vulnerability of transport infrastructure. Ji-Eun is also interested in developing technical toolkits, including MBNPy, a Bayesian network toolkit for large-scale systems, available on her research blog.
