Dr. Ji Seon Kim

Biography

Ji-Seon Kim joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in 2025 as a Professor of Electronic Materials, part of the Sustainable Chemistry Materials Initiative. He was previously a Professor of Solid State Physics at Imperial College London and served as Director of the EPSRC Plastic Electronics Centre and Doctoral Training Director for the MRes in Soft Electronic Materials. He has held honorary positions at two prestigious institutions: a Specially Appointed Professorship at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the WCU Professorship at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. In his career, Kim has received the EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship while at the University of Cambridge and obtained a PhD in Physics in 2000 under the supervision of Professor Sir Richard Friend. He has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2023 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2022. Currently, he is active on the UK EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team and has various editorial roles in academic journals. His research primarily focuses on sustainable molecular semiconductors and the development of new classes of electronic materials, addressing scientific questions related to novel optoelectronic devices, including solar cells and biosensors. His collaborative efforts extend to industrial partners such as Samsung Electronics and Oninn, contributing to impactful research projects in clean energy generation and healthcare applications.
