Biography

Jiachen Zhang is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). His research focuses on the interactions between air quality, climate, and society, with a goal to quantify the health equity impacts of strategies aimed at mitigating climate change and air pollution. Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from USC and a Bachelor's Degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Peking University. Before joining USC, he was a manager at the California Air Resources Board, leading a team of scientists and engineers in original research and policy development to promote electric vehicles and reduce emissions. He chairs the Entrepreneurship Innovation Committee for the Chinese-American Engineers and Scientists Association of Southern California and serves as secretary for the Air & Waste Management Association West Coast Section. His research covers various aspects, including the assessment of urban land use modifications to mitigate heat, evaluating policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and studying the atmospheric impacts of black carbon and PFAS.
