Biography

Jian Luo graduated from Tsinghua University with dual Bachelor's degrees in Materials Science Engineering and Electronics Computer Technology. He received his M.S. degree in Materials Science Engineering in 1999 and Ph.D. degree in Ceramics in 2001 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, Luo worked in the industry at Lucent Technologies and OFS for several years before joining Clemson University as an Assistant, Associate, and then Full Professor in Materials Science Engineering from 2003 to 2012. In January 2013, he moved to UC San Diego as a Professor in NanoEngineering and Materials Science Engineering. Luo has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2005 and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator award in 2007. He has served as Chair of the Basic Science Division of the American Ceramic Society for the 2012-2013 term and as Chair of the Thin Films Interfaces committee for the TMS from 2012 to 2014.
