Jiaoyang Jiang is a Professor at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he focuses on research that spans gap biology and chemistry. His work is particularly focused on the roles of protein post-translational modifications in regulating both human physiological and pathological processes. He is intrigued by a unique type of protein glycosylation known as O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc), which dynamically regulates biological processes and is often implicated in diseases. Jiang's research program employs multidisciplinary approaches to elucidate the mechanisms and functions of O-GlcNAc modification. He earned his PhD in Chemistry from Brown University in 2009, where he studied natural product biosynthetic pathways in bacteria under the supervision of David Cane. Jiang subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Suzanne Walker, where he characterized glycosyltransferase activities and the unique proteolytic activities of human O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT), leading to the discovery of small molecules that inhibit its function. Dr. Jiang started his academic career as an Assistant Professor in drug discovery at UW-Madison in August 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2019 and to Full Professor in 2024.
