Biography

Jiawei Zhang is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He previously served as a postdoctoral fellow supported by the MIT Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Engineering Excellence Laboratory for Information & Decision Systems (LIDS) at MIT, collaborating with notable professors in the field. Jiawei obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Information Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, where he was recognized with the Presidential Award for Outstanding Doctoral Students. His undergraduate degree is in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China, participating in the Hua Loo-Keng Talent Program. His research focuses on developing efficient, scalable, and robust optimization algorithms applicable to large-scale optimization problems, including training and inference for large language models. He is particularly interested in optimization for decision-making in engineering applications such as energy and communication systems. Jiawei is seeking students interested in these areas, welcoming those with strong mathematical and coding skills from disciplines like mathematics, statistics, computer science, and electronic engineering to apply starting in 2025.
