Biography

Jicheng Gong is a Reader in the Department of Engineering at King's College London. His research focuses on developing novel, small-scale mechanical testing methods to address mechanical challenges in various materials including Nickel, Titanium, Zirconium, Tin, and steel ceramic coatings. These research themes are particularly relevant to industries such as aerospace, nuclear, space, and electronic packaging. Prior to his position at King's, he was a Senior Research Fellow in the Materials Department at the University of Oxford, where he developed micromechanical testing methods. His innovative techniques utilize focused ion beam (FIB) machining to create micro-cantilevers and micro-pillars for measuring micromechanical properties with high sensitivity. He has successfully developed unique triangular section micro-cantilevers to determine micro-tension and compression properties. Currently, he leads research on an ultra-small ultra-fast mechanical testing technique driven by ultrasonic actuation, which enables robust fatigue tests at micro and nano-scales. His work expands the accessible length scales upward by using micro-laser machining to fabricate meso-scale mechanical testing pieces, thus allowing study of high-cycle fatigue at various length scales.
