Jie Chen is a professor in the Department of Cell Developmental Biology at the University of Illinois. His research focuses on understanding signal transduction mechanisms that underlie fundamental cellular developmental processes in mammals. Utilizing a combination of experimental approaches from molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and bioinformatics, as well as mouse models, his lab has unraveled novel signaling mechanisms, particularly concerning the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) network and its regulation of cell growth, autophagy, metabolism, and skeletal muscle differentiation/regeneration. Currently, his research efforts are concentrated on lipid signaling, autophagy, and cell-cell communication in the context of cytokines related to skeletal muscle regeneration and muscular dystrophy.
