Dr. Chen received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tianjin University, P.R. China, in 1982, followed by a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Shanghai Medical University, P.R. China, in 1985, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University in 1989. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Drexel University from 1989 to 1990. Dr. Chen joined IUPUI in August 1990 as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Orthodontics, which later led to his promotion to Associate Professor in 1995 and to Professor in 2000. He joined Purdue University in 2024 as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and his research has been supported by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the Department of Energy (DOE), and various industrial research foundations. His current research efforts focus on the development of innovative, evidence-based orthodontic technologies and treatment strategies for energy efficiency, conducted through facilities like the Purdue University Industrial Training & Assessment Center and the Dental Biomechanics Laboratory.
