Biography

Jie Liang completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Geographic Science from Sun Yat-Sen University in 2014 and obtained a PhD in Ecology from Tsinghua University in 2019, where he was supervised by Professor Guanghui Lin. His doctoral research focused on quantifying water-carbon processes in coastal mangrove forests using modeling techniques to analyze gas exchange and water isotopic signatures. He collaborated with distinguished experts such as Professor Xuhui Lee from Yale University and Professor Leonel Sternberg from the University of Miami to determine water isotope ratios in plant stems from identical source water, which opened new avenues for exploration in his field. After completing his PhD, he held a postdoctoral position at the Australian National University under the guidance of Professor Graham Farquhar, where he tested modeled water processes in plant stems, analyzing isotopic data to ascertain the origins of isotopic differences in stem water. His current research focuses on predicting plant water status through studying the swelling and shrinkage of plant stems and understanding large-scale plant-water relations, a major research objective under Professor Marilyn C. Ball's mentorship at ANU. His contributions to understanding plant water use efficiency include the refinement of mechanisms that incorporate foliar water uptake into water balance dynamics. As an emerging researcher, he actively engages in various projects and collaborations to further advance the knowledge in his area of expertise.
