Biography

Professor James Bain received his B.S. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, his M.S. in 1991, and his Ph.D. in 1993 in Materials Science Engineering from Stanford University. He is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He serves as the Associate Director of the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) and is involved in numerous research areas within the field of information storage. His research programs focus on heat assisted magnetic recording, resistive switching memory, and reconfigurable electronics. Prof. Bain has co-authored over 225 papers focused on magnetic, optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical devices and systems. He is an active member of professional societies including the Materials Research Society, IEEE Magnetics, and IEEE Electron Devices. His recent work includes the development of thin film materials and devices for information storage systems such as hard disk drives and tape drives, specifically investigating the performance specifications and architectures of storage systems.
