Biography

Jim Barry is the Director of Performing Visual Arts at California Institute of Technology, where he specializes in silk-paintings, watercolors, and etchings, drawing inspiration from his experiences in anthropology and science. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and spent five years in Senegal, West Africa, immersing himself in the local culture, which continues to inform his artistic practice. Barry's artwork is currently exhibited in various museums across Africa and French cultural centers in West Africa and Tanzania. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he provides volunteer assistance with translation for African development projects and builds websites for African science conferences. He has been instrumental in creating new Virtual Reality tools for Interactive Spaces, collaborating with Santiago Lombeyda and George Djorgovski at the Center for Data-Driven Discovery. His diverse interests include drawing inspiration from fluid dynamics, geology, robotics, and planetary science.
