Jim Dai joined Cornell University in 2012 as a professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering. Prior to joining Cornell, he held the Chandler Family Chair in Industrial Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology from 1990 to 2012. He has also served as a visiting professor at several institutions, including Tsinghua University, National University of Singapore, Aarhus University, Stanford University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dai was elected as a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). His research interests focus on applied probability models, efficient resource allocations, and processing networks that model service systems, including customer contact centers, data centers, and hospital patient flow management. He develops theories using fluid limits to study stability in processing networks and diffusion models to analyze control processing networks. His recent work involves using Stein’s method as an engineering tool to develop approximation models and establish error bounds for approximations.
