Biography

Jim Fraser is a first-year PhD researcher in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh. His PhD project is titled "Past, Present, Uncertain Future Scotland’s Oilscape: Investigating Entanglements Oil Cultural Life Aberdeen," which examines the impact of the North Sea oil cultural life on his hometown of Aberdeen. Co-supervised by Dr. John Harries and Dr. Zeynep Oguz, this project is supported by an ESRC scholarship through the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science's open competition. The research focuses on the relationship developed in Aberdeen as the North Sea oil industry emerged fifty years ago, transforming the small city, previously known for its granite fishing, into the 'Oil Capital of Europe.' This transformation has forever altered the cityscape, marked by modern glass and steel offices replacing the old granite streets. As the global transition away from fossil fuels progresses, understanding the interconnection between oil and place is vital for informing a green transition strategy in Aberdeen that considers the needs of its communities. The fieldwork for this project will commence in 2026 and is expected to involve extensive study and engagement with local cultural life. Additionally, he has teaching responsibilities for the semester course 'South Asia in the World.'
