Dr. Jim Hillen

Biography

Dr. Jim Hillen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Queen's University, having joined as a Fellow in Forensic and Correctional Psychiatry in 1996. He graduated from McMaster Medical School and received training from the University of Toronto, Western University, and McMaster University. Dr. Hillen is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both Surgery (Obstetrics Gynecology) and Medicine (Psychiatry). His clinical and academic experience includes working with individuals involved in the criminal justice system and in forensic hospitals and correctional settings. He has extensive experience in supervising trainees at various levels, including undergraduate, residency (Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Public Health), and post-graduate training in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. Currently, Dr. Hillen is the Psychiatric Director of the Acute Admissions Service at the Regional Treatment Centre (Ontario), a 96-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital operated by Correctional Service Canada. He provides psychiatric services to a diverse patient population, including individuals with complex mental health issues such as psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. Additionally, Dr. Hillen practices psychodynamic individual and couple psychotherapies within a rural family health team.
