Biography

Jim Jen is a Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. He directs the Carnegie Mellon Corporate Startup Lab (CSL), a Swartz Center-Tepper initiative that conducts research and develops tools to help companies adopt and integrate entrepreneurial practices into their own innovation efforts. The CSL offers a unique project course on corporate entrepreneurship, where interdisciplinary teams of graduate students partner with large corporations to test and develop real startup ideas. Beyond his work at CMU, Jim has played an active leadership role in the growth of the Pittsburgh entrepreneurship community for over 20 years. He co-founded AlphaLab, one of the top-ranked accelerator programs in the U.S., and subsequently helped launch AlphaLab Gear, AlphaLab Health, and Robotics Factory with corporate industry partners. Jim led initial investments in more than 200 pre-seed and seed stage companies through Innovation Works, contributing to the success of Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing tech companies, resulting in billion-dollar exit values and additional investments. Before moving to Pittsburgh, Jim held product management roles in several Silicon Valley-based companies, including venture-backed firms and Fortune 500 corporations. As a management consultant, he advised consumer-oriented businesses on strategic planning and revenue growth strategies.
