Biography

Jim Johansson is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Nursing, specializing in forensic nursing and mental health. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014 and a Master of Nursing in 2020 from the University of Saskatchewan. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Nursing from the University of Ottawa, expecting to graduate in 2024. His clinical experience includes forensic psychiatric nursing, emergency mental health, and clinical nurse education. Before his nursing career, Jim worked for a decade in wildfire management in Alberta, which significantly informs his research interests in the intersection of mental health and climate change. His research focuses on marginalized populations, particularly the aging incarcerated persons, and critically examines nursing practices through a poststructuralist lens informed by theorists such as Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. Jim is also an editorial board member for the Journal of Forensic Nursing, and he is currently developing a project on the provision of medical assistance in dying for individuals with mental illness in Canada.
