Biography

Jim Lewis is a freelance trumpet player, improviser, and composer/arranger currently serving as an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, at the University of Toronto. He completed his Master’s Degree in Performance with a concentration in Jazz from the University of Louisville in 2004. His studies included trumpet performance with Dr. Michael Tunnell, composition and arranging with John LaBarbera, and improvisation with Jamey Aebersold. Jim is the Musical Director of the Ottawa Jazz Festival's annual 'Youth Jazz Summit' and 'Stingray Rising Stars', which bring together Canadian jazz students aged 17 to 22 for rehearsals, workshops, and performances. He has adjudicated festivals and presented workshops across Canada and the USA, including clinics for the International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences in cities like Chicago, New York, Anaheim, and New Orleans. Jim's performance credits include collaborations with influential Canadian improvisers and participation in groups such as the Frank Lozano Group and Christine Duncan’s Element Choir. He has performed at jazz festivals across Canada, the United States, and Europe, highlighting his role within Canada’s vibrant jazz community.
