Biography

Jim Marcus co-directs the Capital Punishment Clinic at the University of Texas School of Law. He has extensive experience representing death-sentenced clients in both state and federal habeas corpus proceedings. Prior to his role at Texas Law, he spent a decade as the Executive Director of the Texas Defender Service, a non-profit organization focused on capital defense, which he helped found in 1995. Professor Marcus continues to train and support capital habeas counsel in Texas cases and lectures on capital defense seminars nationwide. His notable work includes significant involvement in landmark cases addressing racial discrimination in jury selection and securing the rights of indigent death-sentenced prisoners in successive federal habeas corpus proceedings. He graduated from the University of Texas Plan II Honors Program and the University of Houston Law Center.
