Biography

Jim Petrik is a Professor at the University of Guelph, where he leads research focused on developing novel therapies for advanced-stage cancers. His work has significantly advanced the understanding of tumor vasculature, particularly in ovarian cancer, identifying it as an important therapeutic target. His research has demonstrated how tumors can aggressively recruit their own blood supply through angiogenesis, which in turn leads to poorly formed and dysfunctional blood vessels that hinder effective treatment delivery. By developing the fusion protein Fc3TSR, he has shown the capacity to specifically target and prune these immature tumor vessels, re-establishing normal vascular functions and enhancing the efficacy of various therapeutic approaches including chemotherapy, oncolytic viruses, and immunotherapies. Dr. Petrik is also engaged in collaborative research initiatives that study the heightened cancer risks firefighters face due to carcinogen exposure during their duties, aimed at establishing improved preventive measures and early detection strategies. He has authored numerous publications in leading journals and holds adjunct positions at McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario.
