Dr. Jim Portegies

Biography

Jim Portegies is an Assistant Professor in the Applied Analysis group at the Centre for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications (CASA) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on mathematical fields such as analysis, measure theory, and geometry, applying these techniques to various problems in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Portegies utilizes spectral geometry techniques to prove guarantees for the performance of nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithms. He is currently investigating the design of algorithms that mimic human and animal learning processes. With numerous advances in artificial intelligence, the question of how to design machines that learn like humans remains a key challenge. He believes the answer lies in developing universal learning algorithms that are simple and efficient while applicable to a wide range of tasks. He conjectures that the human brain operates using a powerful, general learning algorithm capable of handling various signals independently. Ultimately, his work aims to leverage mathematics to uncover and develop these algorithms.
