Biography

Jim received a Bachelor of Human Kinetics in Kinesiology from the University of Windsor in 1986, a Master of Science in 1988, and a Ph.D. in biomechanics from the University of Waterloo in 1992. He has been a professor for 23 years at the University of Guelph, University of Windsor, and McMaster University, where he holds the title of Professor Emeritus. Additionally, Jim is the owner of Potvin Biomechanics Inc. His research areas include biomechanics and physical ergonomics. His basic research focuses on the study of joint mechanics and muscle fatigue, while his applied research involves developing valid ergonomic methods to quantify injury risk in the workplace, particularly through the assessment of manual materials handling tasks and evaluating the risk of upper limb disorders. Jim has supervised 70 graduate students and has employed 60 graduates in his work. In total, he has published over 80 scientific articles during his academic career.
