Jim Tanaka is a professor of psychology at the University of Victoria and a member of the Royal Society of Canada. His research primarily focuses on how experience shapes perception, particularly in the context of expertise in face recognition and related cognitive neural mechanisms. Tanaka's work involves studying various “experts” such as birdwatchers, geologists, and dermatologists, to understand how their everyday expertise influences the recognition of faces and the perception of emotions. Additionally, he operates the Minds Lab, which utilizes a range of experimental techniques including psychophysics, eye-tracking, EEG, and machine learning to explore these areas. In 2020, he founded the Different Minds Collaborative, an international group of vision scientists aimed at investigating the perception of objects, faces, and scenes.
