Dr. Jimmie Svensson

Biography

Jimmie Svensson earned a PhD in Literary Studies in 2016 from Lund University. He has previously taught at Karlstad, Umeå, and Linnaeus University. Before embarking on his academic career, he worked as a schoolteacher and is qualified to teach English, German, and History in Swedish schools. Svensson’s research focuses on poetic form semiotics, drawing on the theoretical framework of C. S. Peirce. His doctoral thesis examined how auditive and visual verse forms create meaning within 20th century Swedish poetry, with notable examples from poets such as Edith Södergran, Gunnar Ekelöf, and Tomas Tranströmer. He approached the topic from four perspectives: figurative language, intertextuality, metalyric, and emotionality. Svensson's postdoctoral project, conducted at Umeå University from 2020 to 2022, centered on contemporary oral poetry reading practices, applying digital and quantitative methods to enhance his research profile with an intermedial focus. Additionally, he has worked on older literature, notably as co-editor of a research anthology on the Swedish Romantic poet Esaias Tegnér and has both translated and commented on a selection of poems by Friedrich Schiller.
