Biography

Jimmy Lin is a Professor and holds the David R. Cheriton Chair at the University of Waterloo, where he specializes in the intersection of information retrieval, natural language processing, and data management. He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT in 2004. Lin is passionate about translating research into real-world impact, presently serving as Chief Scientist at Primal, a Waterloo-based company that builds enterprise-grade AI solutions leveraging neural networks and knowledge graphs. Prior to this, he was Chief Scientist at RSVP, a startup focused on deep natural language understanding technologies. From 2010 to 2012, Lin took an extended sabbatical at Twitter, where he worked on services designed to identify relevant content for users and supported the analytics infrastructure for data science. He has also worked with Cloudera since 2009, contributing to the creation of training certification programs. Lin is a Fellow of the ACM and a member of the SIGIR Academy and ACL. Interestingly, he has a historical connection to Friedrich Leibniz as a grand-14 advisor.
