Jian-Gang (Jimmy) Zhu is a full Professor and the ABB Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds a courtesy appointment as a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Dr. Zhu obtained his B.S. degree in Physics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China in 1982, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of California at San Diego in 1983 and 1989, respectively. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon in 1998, he served as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota from 1990 to 1996. Dr. Zhu's research focuses on magnetic data storage technologies, including the development of microstructure thin film recording media and micromagnetic modeling for MRAM memory design. He is an IEEE Fellow, has published over 250 major technical journal papers and written six book chapters, and has been a co-inventor on twelve U.S. patents. His research has received recognition, including the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1993.
