Biography

Professor Jin-Chong Tan specializes in Nanoscale Engineering within the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. He obtained his BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Malaysia in 1999 and an MEng in Materials Engineering from Singapore in 2001. He completed his PhD in Materials Science at Cambridge University in 2005, focusing on lightweight composite materials constructed from stainless steel fibers. In September 2012, he joined the University of Oxford as a University Lecturer and Tutorial Fellow, progressing to a full professorship by July 2018. His research leads the Multifunctional Materials & Composites Laboratory, where he and his team develop porous metal-organic frameworks and multifunctional thin films, exploring their applications in real-world scenarios. His interests include nanoengineering and the development of novel light-emitting materials and tunable nanocomposites for disruptive sensing technologies. Professor Tan employs advanced experimental techniques like atomic force microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy, along with theoretical modeling using quantum mechanical calculations.
