Biography

Jinyoung Choi is a Research Scientist in the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, focusing on Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology. His research delves into the mechanisms underlying systemic autoimmunity, with a particular emphasis on lupus nephritis. Dr. Choi is investigating the role of renal infiltrating effector CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in promoting renal cell injury and organ failure. His work postulates that the degree of immune cell infiltration is directly correlated with clinical prognosis; however, the nature and functionality of the infiltrating cells remains unclear. His research questions revolve around the differentiation of autoreactive T cells into effector cells capable of damaging adjacent tissues, and the factors required for the genesis of such cell types. After emigrating from South Korea to pursue his doctoral studies at Oregon State University under Dr. Nancy Kerkvliet, he completed his PhD in 2000. He then joined Dr. Joseph Craft’s laboratory at Yale as a postdoctoral fellow, supported by a fellowship from the Arthritis Foundation, where he investigated self-reactive T-cells and self-tolerance.
