Biography

Jitendra Malik is the Arthur J. Chick Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a Professor Emeritus in Vision Science and Optometry. His research is primarily focused on computer vision and computational modeling of human vision, where he explores constructing computational models of early visual processes, texture perception, stereopsis, and motion processing. He aims to develop models that are grounded in both psychophysical and physiological data, challenging the common practice of relying solely on a priori assumptions. His computational models advance the understanding of internal consistency and robustness of simulated processes. In his recent work, Malik has tackled problems in texture discrimination and stereopsis, successfully creating a physiologically plausible model for texture discrimination that quantitatively explains psychophysical data regarding the discriminability of texture pairs. Additionally, he has developed a novel computational model for stereopsis that encompasses position, orientation, and spatial frequency disparity within a single framework.
