Biography

Jiun-Shyan Chen is a Distinguished Professor in Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, holding the William Prager Endowed Chair. He is also a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the founding director of the Center for Extreme Events Research. Professor Chen joined UC San Diego in 2013, previously serving as Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCLA, and chairing the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department from 2007 to 2012. His research focuses on computational mechanics and multiscale materials modeling, with a particular emphasis on the development of meshfree methods and advanced finite element techniques for dynamic nonlinear mechanics of materials. He has earned a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the John von Neumann Medal and the Raymond D. Mindlin Medal. His extensive experience includes various leadership roles within prestigious engineering associations and numerous fellowships from notable organizations.
