Jiying Zhao received a B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Computer Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from North China Electric Power University (NCEPU), China in 1983, 1988, and 1992 respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering from Keio University, Japan in 1998. Dr. Zhao worked as an assistant lecturer and associate professor at NCEPU from 1983 to 1994. He was an instructor and associate professor in the Department of Computing Science at University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University), Canada, from 1998 to 2001. He joined the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Ottawa as an assistant professor in 2001, was promoted to associate professor in 2005, and became a full professor in 2009. His current research interests include image/video processing and multimedia communications. He is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario, IEEE, and IEICE.
