Biography

JJ Prescott is the Henry King Ransom Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School and co-director of the Empirical Legal Studies Center. His research focuses on criminal law, sentencing law reform, employment law, and the dynamics of civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on settlement processes. Prescott's work is heavily empirical, exploring how technology may improve access to justice in legal decision-making. His current projects involve studying the effects of criminal record expungement and record-clearing reforms, measuring the impact of noncompetition agreements on the labor force, and evaluating prosecutorial discretion in understanding decision-making impacts on defendant outcomes and disparities. Prescott also founded Court Innovations Inc. where he developed Matterhorn, an online dispute resolution platform that assists individuals facing legal challenges with government entities. With an educational background that includes a Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, a Juris Doctor from Harvard University, and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has presented widely and contributed significantly to discussions surrounding law technology and empirical research relevant to legal reform.
