Biography

Jo joined the University of Southampton in January 2022 as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Economics. Prior to joining the University of Southampton, Jo was a Professor in the Department of Economics & Related Studies at the University of York and served as the Head of Department from 2015 to 2021. Jo's research primarily focuses on labour economics and applied microeconometrics, with a particular interest in the UK labour market including issues related to the gender wage gap and in-work poverty. Jo's work has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the Low Pay Commission. Additionally, Jo is a member of the Home Office’s Migration Advisory Committee and the Trustee of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, as well as serving as a Governor of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and Chair of the Royal Economic Society's Women's Committee.
