Biography

Joachim Yeshaya is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, Tilburg University. He holds an interuniversity chair in 'Tradition and Contemporary Currents in Judaism' from KU Leuven and UCLouvain. Since 2019, he has served as the editor for Medieval Judaism for the multivolume Encyclopedia of Bible Reception (EBR). Yeshaya earned his MA in Oriental Languages and Cultures (Arabic/Hebrew) from Ghent University in 2003 and completed his PhD at the University of Groningen in 2009. His academic training includes a year of study at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University College London (UCL). Prior to joining Tilburg University, Yeshaya held postdoctoral research positions in Bochum, Frankfurt, Ghent, and Leuven. His research primarily focuses on medieval Hebrew poetry created by Jewish poets in the Islamic Middle East and Christian Byzantium. He is the author of several monographs, including the oeuvre of Moses Darʿī, a twelfth-century Egyptian Karaite-Jewish poet, and has co-edited multiple volumes on Jewish poetry and exegesis. He also authored an accessible introduction on Jewish-Islamic relations, released in Dutch in 2023.
