Biography

Joan Brugge received her Ph.D. in virology from Baylor College of Medicine and completed her postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado Medical Center. She has held professorships at SUNY Stony Brook and the University of Pennsylvania, and she was an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Brugge became the Scientific Director and Senior Vice President at ARIAD Pharmaceuticals before returning to academia as a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School in 1997. She served as Chair of the department from 2004 to 2014 and became Co-Director of the Ludwig Center at Harvard in 2014. Currently, she is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Allen Institute of Cell Sciences. Her laboratory focuses on investigating cellular processes and pathways involved in the normal morphogenesis of epithelial tissues and their role in the initiation and progression of epithelial tumors.
