Biography

Joan M. G. Crane, MD, MSc, FRCSC is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. With a strong background in maternal-fetal medicine, she completed her M.D. from Memorial University in 1989 and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dalhousie University, finishing in 1994. Her significant contributions to research include over 100 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on preterm birth prediction and prevention, obesity in pregnancy, and the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on pregnancy and labor induction. Throughout her career, Dr. Crane has received numerous accolades, including multiple research awards from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and teaching awards from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Her leadership roles include serving as President of the Atlantic Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and membership on various committees for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Crane's research and clinical interests remain pivotal to the advancement of maternal and fetal health in Canada.
