Biography

Joan Jonas is a pioneer of video performance art and an acclaimed multimedia artist. Her work typically encompasses video, performance, installation, sound, text, and drawing. Trained in art history and sculpture, she became a central figure in the performance art movement of the late 1960s. Joan's practice explores innovative ways of seeing, the rhythms of ritual, and the authority of objects and gestures. A New York native, she continues to live and work in New York City. She received her B.A. in Art History from Mount Holyoke College in 1958 and studied sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, later obtaining her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Columbia University in 1965. After teaching at MIT since 1998, she is currently Professor Emerita in the Program in Art, Culture, and Technology. Joan's major exhibitions include 'Light Time Tales' at HangarBicocca in Milan and she has been awarded numerous honors including the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy in 2018. Her recent solo exhibitions featured works at venues such as the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston and the Bergen Kunsthall in Norway. Joan has also represented dOCUMENTA in Kassel and participated in prominent retrospectives across Europe and America.
