Biography

Joan Mahoney is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton, having joined the Law School in 2016 after moving to the UK in 2010. She has a diverse academic background with degrees from the University of Chicago (BA MA), Wayne State University (JD), and Cambridge University (PhD). Joan has practiced law for four years before entering academia, where she has taught at four law schools in the United States. Her teaching interests include Legal History, Public Law, and Family Law, focusing on the regulation of adult relationships and the state's role in parenting and parenthood. She supervises dissertations and serves as a personal academic tutor for a group of students. Joan is also the Programme Lead for JD (Juris Doctor) Accelerated Students. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has published extensively, with around thirty articles and book chapters addressing constitutional law, legal history, reproductive technology, and bioethics. Notable works include her recent book 'MI5, Cold War Rule of Law' that discusses civil liberties restrictions during the Cold War.
