Biography

Joan Ockman holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Cooper Union and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University. Before becoming a full-time faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania's Stuart Weitzman School of Design, she taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, where she served as Director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture from 1994 to 2008. Alongside her roles at Columbia and Penn, she has held teaching appointments at Harvard, Yale, Cooper Union, Cornell, the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and Berlage Institute in the Netherlands. Ockman began her career at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York and served as editor of the journal 'Oppositions' and was responsible for the 'Oppositions Books' series. Her notable edited publications include 'Architecture Culture 1943–1968', an award-winning anthology published by Rizzoli in 1993, 'Pragmatist Imagination: Thinking Things Making' (2001), and 'Architecture School: 300 Years Educating Architects in North America' (2012). Her forthcoming collection of essays is scheduled to be published in 2019. In recognition of her collaborative achievements, she was honored by the American Institute of Architects in 2003 and was named a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Historians in 2017.
