Biography

Joan Redmond is a historian specializing in Early Modern British History, with a focus on early modern Ireland and Britain. Her research interests include religion, violence, rebellion, conflict, ethnicity, identity, and the early British empire. She is currently working on a forthcoming monograph titled 'Religion, Rebellion Violence Ireland, c. 1603-1649', which examines the crucial role that religion played in shaping Irish violence during the seventeenth century, particularly within the contexts of colonialism and political upheaval. Redmond has also authored contributions to various publications concerning memory, gender, and the histories of Irish-British religious conflicts during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. She holds a BA in History and Political Science from Trinity College Dublin, an MPhil in Early Modern History from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. Since joining King’s College London in 2016, she has taught a diverse range of modules at both the undergraduate and master’s levels, addressing early modern historiography and the complexities surrounding religious conflict. In 2019, she contributed to the BBC Radio 4 series 'The Invention of Britain', showcasing her expertise in the field.
