Dr. Joan Steitz

Biography

Joan Steitz is a Sterling Professor at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. She is renowned for her pioneering research on RNA and its role in gene expression. Steitz's career began after earning her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967, which was followed by postdoctoral work in Cambridge, England. She joined Yale as an assistant professor and quickly ascended to full professor and chair of her department. Her work has significantly enhanced the understanding of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and their crucial function in RNA processing. Steitz's research focuses on RNA-protein complexes, investigating their influence on gene expression and viral interactions with host cells. Her notable contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Warren Alpert Prize and the Wolf Prize in Medicine.
